Baruch & NYU Science for Good Team: SunCulture
I met Charlie Nichols at an event for aspirational entrepreneurs I put together last April. Fast forward one year, and Charlie has a team, company, and a good shot at winning the NYU Social Venture Competition.
Charlie is a co-founder of SunCulture and an Economics student at Baruch College. He worked in Senegal with Teaching Projects Abroad and Books for Africa to improve child literacy and in Kenya and Tanzania researching renewable energy applications in smallholder agriculture.
His company, SunCulture, is developing an affordable solar irrigation system for farmers in East Africa. Only 6% of African farmland is irrigated, compared to 37% in China and India, leaving the continent highly vulnerable to climate change. The SunCulture Irrigation Kit combines the reliability of solar power with the efficiency of low-pressure drip irrigation that delivers water directly to crop roots, resulting in yield gains of up to 100% and water savings of up to 80%.
Stay tuned for more on SunCulture!
